Our Coaches

Corning United operates because a group of talented coaches volunteer their time to our organization. All our coaches have at least an F coaching license and all participate in ongoing training to develop coaching techniques and safety protocols.


Chad Freelove, Director of Coaching – USSF D License
As a scholastic player, Chad won the boys state soccer championship with Bath High School in 1996. The team held a record of 49-0-1 during his playing career. Chad signed a letter of intent to play Walsh University in Ohio, before electing to play at Keuka College. Knee and hip injuries forced an early end to his playing career.

Chad’s vast soccer coaching experience includes 44 seasons over 18 years, ranging from U6 YMCA and CVSA to premier travel; JV and varsity soccer to U19 premier national indoor teams. In 2010, he was named New York West Premier Coach of Year.

He has also coached lacrosse at modified, junior varsity, varsity and premier travel levels. Additionally, he has coached five seasons of primary grade basketball.

Chad teaches Common Core English to students with emotional disabilities at Corning-Painted Post High School. His son Nathaniel is on the U13 boys Fury team. Son Taylor is on the U10 Boys’ Lightning team as a primary player and secondary to the U13 boys Inferno. Daughter Peyton is making the transition from CVSA to Corning United U8 this fall.

Jason Felker
Coach Felker is life-long player and fan of the game. He has a decade of coaching experience. He loves to help kids grow and develop as soccer players.

Jason lives in Corning and has two daughter who play for Corning United and Corning-Painted Post School District.

Mike Gill
Mike played basketball and soccer at Elmira College and has nearly two decades of coaching experience at the varsity, JV and youth levels. He coached the Thomas A Edison varsity girls program for 10 years, during which the team had two back-to-back undefeated seasons. Mike’s great accomplishment is the number of young women who went on to play all levels, from junior college to Division I. He also coached boys basketball, soccer and track at the scholastic level.

Now, Mike coaches his son and daughter in Crystal Hawks/Fire Hawks basketball, which he founded, and soccer for Corning United. Mike is an assistant principal at Corning-Painted Post High School.

Riley Freeland
Before joining Corning United, Riley coached teams for several years, including boys and girls in the CVSA and YMCA youth soccer program.

Riley is a scientist at Corning Inc. and an avid home DIYer. His son Sean and daughter Chloe both enjoy soccer on Corning United teams.

Clive Howard
Having lived in England until he was 16, Clive grew up in a soccer culture. If he wasn’t at school or drinking tea, he was always playing soccer with his friends. He enjoys sharing his passion for the game through coaching and mentoring the next generation of soccer players.

Clive has coached for more than 15 years at various youth levels. He focuses on teamwork, organization and ball control while maintaining a positive competitive attitude

All four of his children are/were active players on travel and Corning-Painted Post school teams and they share his enthusiasm to play and watch the premier league every weekend.

Louis Hazledine
Louis is originally from Nottingham,UK, where he played soccer (football in the UK), basketball, tennis, cricket, field hockey and rugby during his school years. As a young adult, Louis played as a striker on a competitive league soccer team until he moved to the US.

Louis has several years of soccer coaching experience, but prior, he was a private swim instructor. Every student of his learned the basics of swimming, and many of his swimmers went on to be successful in competitive events.

Louis has a daughter, Hallie, who acts as the team mascot and spends her time stealing balls on the sidelines.

Rich Wagner, Registrar, Program Director – D License
Coach Wagner has been with Corning United since its inception in 1999. He has more than 20 years of coaching youth soccer.
